A fire at a Columbia Straw Supply stackyard on Lyons Ferry Road has destroyed or damaged about a thousand tons of wheat straw which has been stored there in preparation for the launch of Columbia Pulp’s Lyons Ferry mill.

The fire is contained and the site will be under 24 hour fire watch. No injuries have occurred. The cause of the fire is not known at this point. Columbia Pulp and Columbia Straw are thankful for the rapid and effective response from the Walla Walla, Starbuck, Clyde, Eureka, and Prescott fire departments. We also thank Pacific Civil & Infrastructure, the contractor who is building the Lyons Ferry plant, for their contribution to the fire suppression effort.

The lost inventory represents only a small fraction of the total straw that has been collected to supply the pulp mill during its initial operations. Columbia Straw Supply distributes the Columbia Pulp inventory across multiple stackyards with highway and water separation. This fire will have no impact on the start-up of the Lyons Ferry mill.
